January 26th to January 30th

This week we will be learning how to create expressions from a word problem.  Once we do that, we can also create a word problem from an expression (which is the opposite of what we learn first).  In order to be successful with this topic you must understand a few different topics.

1, The Five Parts of an Expression
The five pieces that can be part of an expression are the coefficent, variable, constant, term and product.  The activities below will help you learn more about these.

a.VIDEO: Vocabulary Terms for Expressions: Constant, coefficent, variable, terms

b. VIDEO: Watch the first two videos on the parts of an expression.

c.  Try writing expressions!  This is what we are doing next.

d.  Activity Sheet for Group 4

2.  What Is an Expression?
An expression is a mathematical phrase that does not have an answer.  Simply, it's a math problem WITHOUT and equal sign = or any "greater than" or "less than" symbol called an INEQUALITY (<,>).  Learn more about expressions by investigating the activities below.

3.  Operation (+,-, multiply, divide) Vocabulary
You must learn how to read a statement and identify the words that tell you how to construct your expressions.  There are identifying words that mean to add, subtract, multiply and divide,.
a. Activity #1: IXL

4.  Creating Simple Expressions from a Word Problem
We will be learning how to create expressions when given an example in a sentence.  Below are some activities that will help you get past the beginning stage,

5.  Creating Expressions With More than One Operation (Levels 3 and 4)
a.  Math Goodies:  Try to solve some of the problems in the quiz at the bottom of the page.  Aim for at least 4 out 5 correct.
